Hello Everyone,
As of of today Michigan is under a stay at home order issued by Gov. Whitmer in order to slow the advancement of the COVID 19 outbreak. That means EVERYONE is to stay at home and only travel for reasons that are essential, such as grocery shopping, picking up carry out, travelling to your essential job or caring for another. This is added to the CDC advisory asking senior citizens and anyone with a compromised immune system to minimize human contact to protect themselves.
In response to this, a few good men in our neighborhood have banded together to create a help network for our homebound and health-compromised neighbors — those who cannot or should not leave their homes during this COVID-19 outbreak. The idea is to create a network connecting those individuals who are healthy and leaving their homes already to pick up provisions with neighbors who are homebound.
The initial letter introducing this service and asking for volunteer shoppers was sent on Sunday. We received a modest response from those willing to shop. Please consider reviewing the guidelines and volunteer form and offering your service. All volunteers who will pick up items should be under 60 years old and healthy with no signs or symptoms. Let us be very clear: we are not trying to create any extra risk for the volunteer, and ask that you would already be intending to shop.
At first, we are limiting deliveries to seniors, to ensure our capacity. A senior needing assistance will be linked to a shopping volunteer. That volunteer will contact the housebound neighbor by phone to determine how the transaction will be made. There is to be no direct physical contact. Perhaps a list and money between the door for the volunteer and a package left on the porch for the resident. A shopping service such as through Kroger or Target might be an option. The SPA shopper would only need to pick up the items and deliver them to the resident. These deliveries would be for non-emergency, and non-time sensitive provisions.
If you find yourself in need of help or able to provide your volunteer service, please review the SPA guidelines on the forms attached to this email.
The SPA Shopping Helpline # is (734) 956-0064. Please leave your name and number and someone will return your call.
Remember this is only for non-emergency provisions. Any emergency issue should be handled by our Dearborn Police and Fire departments.
Stay safe,
Cindy and your SPA Board
